Poster design for book presentation:
La Granja del Ritz

As part of Can Batlló’s 15th anniversary celebrations, the Fundación Salvador Seguí planned a presentation of the book, La Granja del Ritz by Teresa Roig. The book weaves historical and love stories throughout the history of the famous farm, from its days as the fresh-food supplier of the Ritz Hotel, to the struggles of the local neighbourhood.

A poster was needed, to publicise the event, mostly via email and social media. A few copies would be printed and hung around Can Batlló. The foundation recommended I take a look at their previous posters to get some inspiration.

A selection of posters for previous Fundación Salvador Seguí events, various artists.

I opted for a classic symmetrical layout focusing on the book itself, published by Rosa Dels Vents, a publishing imprint of Penguin Random House. In the background I layered various textures: an old photo of the farm itself, some of the flowers from the book cover, and the texture of old paper. The idea behind this was to communicate the historical aspect of the novel, by giving the background the feel of a slightly mysterious old photo.

This poster does not have the start black, white and red colour palette of many of the foundation’s previous posters, but I worked in those colours in a more subtle way, to match the muted tones of the book cover. I chose the typeface Clarendon NRW extra narrow as a classic, legible option with a little flair. A serif font like Clarendon was the obvious choice here. Based on the cover design and the fact that the book is a historical novel, a sans-serif would have looked out of place.

“Working with Jen has been a very positive experience due to her responsiveness, professionalism, receptiveness, and creativity. The final design of the two posters perfectly met our expectations and successfully incorporated distinct features that highlight the objective of each one.

Jen’s designs are having a very positive effect on the events being announced, due to her creativity and how they highlight the core ideas of what we want to communicate. This first contact has been a pleasure and a success, and we will continue to work with her for future occasions.”
